Hi!! Congrats on inverting! Don't feel bad about stretch marks, I know that's easier said than done!! Its something that most of us have. I have stretch marks and extra skin, and I use to feel embarrassed about it when dancing in front of others. But through my pole dance journey I have learned to accept my body and I no longer care (as much) if someone doesn't like how I look. Stretch marks and other scars are a part of your life journey regardless of how you received them. They are part of you and I think everyone is beautiful, despite what the media tells us!!

Here is an old video I did that may help you if your looking to "hide" wrinkling that happens with stretch marks. This video does say "after baby", but anyone can use these tricks. https://stage.studioveena.com/videos/view/d650d310-c3b4-11df-bc90-001b21721e0c

November 29, 2011 at 9:58 am in reply to: How do you prepare students to spinning? What about the first spin you teach?

This is the progression I feel is best…

    1. Introducing strength and flexibility work first as you said you do is great https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

    2. Half spins, there are several, the step around is included in this category.

    3. Pole Facing Spins are adv beginner. By that I mean Fireman Spin, Ankle Attitude Spin ect. Both hands are on the pole and the body is facing the pole allowing the students to work on proper engagement of the Shoulders.

    4. Reverse/backwards spins. These can also be use for some Adv Beginner because your using the inside and outside arm while keeping the body close to the pole, there for, reducing the stress on the shoulders. Your not throwing your body weight out and away from the pole as you would in forward spins.

    5. Last are Split Grip Spins and Forward Facing (chair, reverse grabs). Students must learn to properly engage the upper arm and not rely on the bottom hand regardless of thumb position, up or down for Split Grips. The same idea is needed for the Forward facing spins. Its extremely important they have the strength necessary to hold not only their body weight with one arm, but also support the added force of the forward facing spins. These spins pull the body out and away from the pole, this places a lot of stress on the shoulders, elbows and wrists. It can take time for students to build up the strength needed. Split grips and Forward spins are NOT beginner moves. These spins can be just as hard on the body as inverting too soon!

Students should be able to complete a double pole climb and solid pole hold before moving on to split grips and forward facing spins. I feel keeping the body as close to the pole as possible is best until sufficient strength is developed.

OH and try using some Aveeno lotion a few hours before polling if you have dry skin. This helps me grip the pole better in the cold winter months! But don't apply it right before you dance, it will be too slick.

Sugartoe….Pole climbs requires upper body strength and proper positioning. If your having troubles because your cold and the pole is cold try this Basic Warm Up. I designed it to warm the pole and your body!  https://stage.studioveena.com/lessons/view/80540840-b88a-11df-856f-001b214581be

Can you do a Pole Hold and a Crucifix? This is a helpful move to build upper body strength. Also be sure your Points of Contact are correct. You want to use the front for the shin/ankle, in between the inside of the knees, and the hands. Make sure your engaging the scapula before pulling up. Here is the lesson https://stage.studioveena.com/lessons/view/233115a0-b889-11df-856f-001b214581be

Keep at it you can do it!!! https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I like Ellie, I have narrow feet and they seem to work well for me. Both the base and heel of the shoe seems stable when I dance. I don't think I have ever had Pleaser heels. I have few heels and boots that do not have a name on them though. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif

Kobajo, Looks like your doing Karols variation and coming more forward almost rolling into it, rather then tumbling/falling into it like I do. For my tumblethe feet/legs stay pointing up as the bum drops down for the initial hold before you tumble. Also I would try using the opposite shoulder. Its looking good!! https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

If competing is something you find exciting then go for it. Be sure to perfect any moves you would like to use….Its better to do a simple move perfectly with control than fancy advanced moves that lack beautiful lines and form.. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Hmmm as for the superman, I can't figure out how your tail bone would ever be in the way. Maybe the studio is using the name superman for a different move???

November 21, 2011 at 9:27 am in reply to: Gripping with toes?

    Oh, pretty shoes!

Its very common to start off using the toes to grip. However once you become stronger you can start to move away from this. I do my climbs with my toes pointed, (unless I'm feeling lazy) lol its just a matter of using the proper Points of Contact and enough upper body strength. Remember there are different ways to climb too. A basic Pole Climb, X Ankle Climb,  Side Climb, to name a few.

To climb without relying heavily on the feet you'll want to work on your upper body strength and work on pushing into the pole with the front of the ankle/shin,(point the toes don't flex the foot up) gripping in between the inside of the knees, instead of curling the toes up and round the pole.

Wearing shoes that will not allow you to use the toes might be good practice for you. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
