Abs do play a part…but really once you have inverted up…..to hold the proper V position your upper back and arms are doing the majority of the work!! They need to be strengthened.
V Inverts take time…..you may be working on your basic invert for months before your ready to move on to the Inverted V. My V invert lesson is way down towards the end of the Intermediate section of the lessons. There are so many other moves you can be working on! The progression shouldn’t be Invert, then V invert…..that’s not going to be obtainable for most dancers. Work on Strengthening your Latissimus, Teres Major, Pectorals, Posterior Deltoids, Trapezius, Rhomboids, Biceps, Abdominals, Hip Flexors, Quadriceps all of these muscles are important for a V Invert. Having the proper hand positioning and Points of Contact with the pole and your body is also important. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_colors.gif
All of the Pole climb variations and pole holds are a great ways to strengthen these muscles along with the Shoulder strength training series of lessons focusing on the scapula. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif

Hi and welcome! Its totally normal to feel shy about dancing in a studio setting and getting dizzy when inverting. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif Doing moves from the floor against your pole or the wall, like elbowstands, reverse handstands and handstands, can be helpful. Give your body some time to adjust to the new tasks your asking it to do.
Don’t forget, if you have a pole at home you can take the online lessons here. I have designed them to take you though the correct progression to build strength for pole dancing. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Its not easier just different….its a hold on spin mode. On static its give you more pole burn and takes a different approach requiring a bit more strength to hold your self up while creating the momentum to spin your body. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Your not weird at all though…when I first stared dancing inverts were hard for me and I could only get up on to the pole by doing a half handspring!!! https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Look here at 1:50 ish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbW-t8Fsdvc

Oh so your going from a V invert then up on to the pole?

One thing to remember when watching her vids…..the holds are done on spin mode. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif so so pretty!!

Oh your saying once you get up there you don’t feel secure!! I get it now……When you invert do your knee go far past your knees or just barely?

You could be using more momentum to SM than you realize…..but when you go to invert your trying from a dead stop and struggling? If you could post a vid that would be helpful. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif Be sure that your placement it right on the invert…if your hands are too high or if your not close to your pole this can make inverting rough. You may just need to do some Abdominal and Scapula strengthening for your invert.

I want to know if the turning the leg trick works….So let us know Joni. I don’t know that it would work well for me. I have a very hard time rotating my leg in that direction with the leg overhead! External rotation is easier for me than internal. Random smurf… https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bigsmurf.gif

joni1….I don’t teach to rotate the leg…so I am not sure if you were asking me. https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
In the lesson….Your rotating the torso/chest away from the pole. Its not a huge movement at all but the slight adjustment is helpful…Did you try it yet? https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I have a "Jade" lesson Split Hip Hold…http://ver3.studioveena.com/lessons/view/2811 new one will be posted soon. One of the other key factors is the position of the torso and the method in which you enter the move. Some methods will produce a flatter jade easier than other. Not only do you need to understand the leg positioning like the others mentioned the torso and legs must be close together before extending fulling in to the split position and the torso should turn away from the pole. If you understand how to turn the body you can hold on without the aid of your arms on the back of the pole! https://stage.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif All of this and more is in the new lesson.
